I generally explain what tetany is in the first session and that its is quite normal, especially if they are new to breathwork. Frequently i can see clients flicking their hands and enquire as to what they are feeling. I feel that of they understand whats happening it doesnt come as a surpise
Sometimes too I bring out the most technical piece of equpiment..a hand towel and ask them to grip and twist it so as to increase movement, it seems to frequently help and can lead to further movement. Feet and toes i encourage movement, and do light massage and with the mouth and lips wiggling of jaw and burbling noises seem to help.
With any cramping in the legs i simply ask them to allow movement to arise and stretch it out.

I’ve since learned that when this happens, actually I should cue the client to take full INBREATHS instead of focusing more on the outbreaths, oops. Also I’ve been given the tip to help the client by lifting their cramped up hands/limbs and let them fall back on the mat a few times (first getting their consent obvs).
Other tips would still be welcome…

I had a client who in his first session with me experienced tetany especially of the lips/around the mouth/jaw. During his second session he developed very strong tetany of the hands, face and even legs, which really scared him and was extremely painful. How can I best support him, a) that it doesn’t go that far in the first place and b) if it does happen. I have been monitoring his breath, which is reasonably full but lips stay slightly pursed, so controlling in and out breath somewhat -no matter what I cue. (He thinks he is breathing fully.) I kept reminding him to breathe out fully too. The tetany happened pretty suddenly though. When it happened I reminded him to calm his breath, focus on the out breath, and reassured that it would go away soon and that nothing dangerous was happening. I also gently massaged his cramped hands and legs. Wasn’t so sure if I should also lightly massage his face; I did. It went away after a while and he calmed quickly and went back into the experience. I told him to keep fully exhaling and to return to normal breath if he felt it coming on again. Any tips for all or any of this? He wants to continue this work but understandably is a bit apprehensive that this might happen again. He did report a good and deep overall experience though.
Then during the integration period when he was lying still and had already been breathing relaxedly for a while he suddenly got a strong cramp in his thigh. Anything that can be done to prevent this? It seemed to come out of nowhere. He is young, quite fit, generally healthy, though with herniated disk issues but painfree (might that have something to do with this?). All I could think of was asking what was happening for him and then again gently massaging the cramped area. It went away quite quickly.
